Pana Sankranti (Maha Vishuba Sankrati)
Pana Sankranti, also known as Maha Vishuba Sankranti is the traditional New Year for Odisha people. This is the 1st day of the month of Baisakh. Baisakha is the 1st month in the Odia calendar. It almost always falls on 14 April every year.
On this particular day, a small pot filled with is hung on a basil (Tulsi) plant. There is a hole at the bottom of this pot which allows the water to fall in drops from the pot. Sattu or chhatua, along with banana and curd, is consumed by the people of Orissa after offering it to the Tulsi plant.
The festival is celebrated with visits to Shiva or Hanuman temples, as the day is considered to be the birthday of Lord Hanuman and also he is the manifestation of lord shiva on earth.[7] Feasts and special drinks such as a chilled sweet mango-milk-yogurt-coconut drink called Pana are shared.
And also in some houses, people do shelter (by straw or leaves of branches of a tree) for Tulsi plant(Basil) in one small pot of water with a hole in its bottom part attach to the top of the roof of the shelter, so that the water will fall on the Tulsi plant in drops for a long time (especially in the day time) and the Tulsi plant will get sufficient water in the summer and will not dye. This day is observed to aware everyone that summer has come and to keep themselves hydrated with Pana or water or any liquid things.
